Where a long trip slows down
Four places get a page of their own because they are where our journeys stop longest: Hue, the Mekong Delta, Luang Prabang and Si Phan Don. Below them, the shorter stops that hold the legs together.
The four long stops
| Place | Country | Nights we plan | Reached by | Journeys |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hue | Vietnam | 3–4 | Night train from Hanoi, about 14 h | Long Way Round; Rail & River |
| Mekong Delta | Vietnam | 5 (Can Tho and Chau Doc) | Road from Ho Chi Minh City, about 4 h to Can Tho | Rail & River |
| Luang Prabang | Laos | 5 | Slow boat, two days; or the fast train from Vientiane, about 2 h | Mekong Slow Boat |
| Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) | Laos | 4 | Road from Pakse, 2–3 h, then a short boat | Three of four journeys |
Each page says what the place is, how long to stay and why less fails, when to go and when not to, how to get there and what things cost — then points to the journeys that stop there.

Why these four
A long trip needs places where you unpack. Hue, Luang Prabang, the Mekong Delta and Si Phan Don are each at the end of a long or tiring leg — a night train, two days on a boat, a delta road, a border — and each has enough to fill three to five days without a programme. They are also where the laundry gets done.
All four sit on water: the Perfume River, the Mekong and its delta channels, the Nam Khan. That is not a coincidence. The old routes through this region ran on rivers, and the towns that grew on them are still the natural stopping points for anyone who travels without flying.
The shorter stops
Hanoi
Where two of the journeys begin. Three nights to recover from the flight before the night train.
Hoi An
Four nights after the Hai Van Pass on Vietnam by Rail & River, including a rest day.
Savannakhet and Champasak
Southern Laos between the Vietnamese border and the islands. Champasak is the base for Vat Phou, the Khmer temple complex on the mountainside, inscribed by UNESCO in 2001.
Kratie and Stung Treng
Small Cambodian river towns on the stretch of the Mekong where the country's remaining river dolphins live — about 89 of them, between the Lao border and Kratie, according to a 2022 report.
Phnom Penh and Kampot
The capital, and the quiet river town at the end of the railway's first stretch south.
Siem Reap
For Angkor: the remains of the Khmer capitals from the 9th to the 15th century, across about 400 square kilometres. Four or five nights, with rest days between temple days.

Places we do not plan stops in
We do not plan beach stays, island resorts in the Gulf of Thailand, or the far north of Vietnam in these journeys. They are fine places; they belong to a different kind of trip. If you want a week on a beach at the end of a long overland journey, we can tell you where the route ends nearest one.
For how the stops fit together, see the overland legs table and the journeys.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Which place would you cut if time is short?
Usually the stop nearest an airport, because it is easiest to visit another time. We would rarely cut the islands or Luang Prabang, which are hard to reach.
Is Angkor not a destination page?
Not here. Angkor is the end of two journeys, and the journey pages cover the days there.
Can a journey start from a destination rather than a city?
Yes. Luang Prabang and Siem Reap both have airports and both make good starting points.
