The Mekong Delta, slowly

The delta is where Vietnam runs out of railway and the useful transport becomes a boat. We plan five nights here, split between Can Tho and Chau Doc, and use it as the river door into Cambodia.

What the delta actually is

The Mekong splits into a fan of channels as it reaches the sea, and the land between them is rice, orchards, towns and water. Can Tho is the largest city and the usual gateway; the national tourism authority calls it the gateway to the delta and names Cai Rang as the most famous of its floating markets. Further west, Chau Doc sits on the Hau River a short way from the Cambodian border, with Sam Mountain behind it and Cham, Khmer and Vietnamese communities in and around the town.

The honest picture: the delta is heavily visited on day trips from Ho Chi Minh City, and the stretch nearest the city can feel like a circuit of the same coconut-candy workshops. The floating markets are smaller than the photographs suggest, and roads and bridges have taken some of their trade. Go two or three hours deeper, stay a few nights, and get onto the small canals early, and the delta is a very different place.

How many nights, and why fewer fails

Five, split three and two. The floating market at Cai Rang is a dawn event; to see it without a 4 a.m. start from Ho Chi Minh City you need to sleep in Can Tho. A second morning on the small canals, and a day off after the long train from Da Nang, make three nights. Chau Doc needs two: one afternoon for Sam Mountain and the town, one morning on the river villages, and an early start for the boat to Phnom Penh or the road back.

A one-night delta trip is mostly road. A day trip from the city is almost all road.

3 = coolest months; 2 = workable (heat from March to June, regular rain July to November).

December and January are the coolest months. Rain falls regularly from July to November, and March to June are hot. The rainy months still work — the showers are often in the afternoon and the fields are green — but they are hot and sticky, and boat days need a plan for a downpour.

Getting there and away without flying

  • From Ho Chi Minh City: about four hours by road to Can Tho. The coach terminal is about four kilometres from the centre; we usually use a private car door to door.
  • Can Tho to Chau Doc: most of a morning by road.
  • Chau Doc to Phnom Penh: a river speedboat leaving in the morning, about six and a half hours including the Vinh Xuong border formalities, done at riverside posts about halfway. One published guide reports that the Cambodian e-visa was not accepted at this crossing and travellers bought a visa at the post for about USD 30 plus fees; check before you travel. Departures and timings change with the season.
  • Back to Ho Chi Minh City: a long day by road from Chau Doc, if you are not going on to Cambodia.

What it costs to be here

Rooms in Can Tho and Chau Doc cost less than in Ho Chi Minh City for the same standard, and riverside rooms are worth asking for. Small-boat hire for the canals is charged per boat, so it is cheaper per head for a party of four than for two. The river boat to Phnom Penh is the largest single transport cost in the delta; the visa at the post, if needed, adds about USD 30 plus fees according to the guide above.

We quote hotels by name and boats per trip; the pricing page explains how.

When to skip the delta

  • If you have already done a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City and liked it less than you hoped: staying longer helps, but it is still flat, hot and watery.
  • If you do not like early mornings; the delta's good hours are between dawn and nine.
  • If you need cool weather: there is none between March and June.

Journeys that stop in the delta

Vietnam by Rail & River ends with three nights in Can Tho and two in Chau Doc.

Cambodia & Laos the Slow Way can begin here instead of Siem Reap, with the river boat to Phnom Penh as its first leg.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the floating market still worth it?

If you go at dawn and stay in Can Tho, yes. It is smaller than it was, and it is a working market rather than a show.

Is the boat to Phnom Penh comfortable?

Most people find six and a half hours manageable. It is a fast passenger boat with the border done halfway, not a cruise.

Can we see the delta in the flood season?

Yes. The rains from July to November bring high water; boat trips run, though some small canals change character.

Do we need a guide?

For the canals and the floating market, a local boat and guide make the morning. In the towns, not really.
